Julie Wilson is an animal sculptor who has exhibited at Birdfair for the last nine years.  She lives and works on the Leicestershire/Rutland border which provides her with many great opportunities to study the animals that she creates. Her latest pieces include a Serval Cat, a Tiger’s head and a Meercat family (one of which she has donated for the auction).

Trips to Kenya, books, the internet and of course wildlife documentaries all supplement the details needed to compliment her pieces. Most welcome of all are the photos and the stories behind the photos that regular Birdfair visitors share with her, one of which has inspired the Hyena piece.  She tries to capture the essence of each animal and bring it to life.

As well as pieces for galleries, fairs and exhibitions she loves the challenge of a commission.

All her pieces are highly detailed, textured and very natural. They are made from coarse stoneware clay using slab building techniques and hand finished using slips and oxides. Her background is in fashion and design and pattern cutting skills learnt at Loughborough College of Art definitely helped her to produce these unique pieces.
