Richard Allen Art

Richard Allen SWLA, artist, printmaker, illustrator based in East Anglia amid the creeks and marshes of the Essex coast. My great passion is the natural world, particularly birds, enjoying the challenge of sketching directly from life in the field in all weather; this experience fuels my paintings and linocuts.

New for this year’s “Virtual Birdfair” are a series of linocuts produced for Laurence Rose’s forthcoming new book “Framing Nature”. It was nice to do some mammals for a change, a selection of these can be seen in the online gallery, and others including Field Cricket and Red Kite are available on request.

Another project newly completed is “Birds of Paradise & Bowerbirds” published by Bloomsbury. A mammoth undertaking which took the best part of twenty years to finish, the 41 colour plates depicting 77 species. A fascinating and mostly colourful group of birds, some of whom build some extraordinary structures and about which new discoveries are being made all the time. The original artwork is available to purchase now as are limited edition giclee prints to order.

Regulars to the Birdfair may have seen my bird filled Minsmere landscapes in the Art Marquee. These prints continue to be popular, are available in two sizes and show up to sixty three species of bird to spot and identify in each. I hope they are a vivid evocation of this fantastic bird rich reserve which draws me back time and again to sketch its wealth of wildlife.

Since last Birdfair I have continued my passion for field sketching, both on my local Essex estuary and further afield. A trip to North Norfolk last November resulted in sketchbooks filled with Snow Bunting and Shorelark sketches, such delightful little birds. This field trip, along with others such as Skokholm the year before, is essential for me in providing the basic knowledge and inspiration for the oil paintings and linocuts that emerge later in the studio.
